Why school libraries are important...

In this age of Google, people often wonder if the library is necessary anymore.  While there is information available anywhere, anytime, the problem is the quality and quantity. We as librarians must ensure students are able to sift through what they read and discern good from bad information.  Check out this video about why teacher-librarians are at the heart of student learning.

Goals of a school librarian:
  • "To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information...

  • To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information...

  • To instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information...

  • To collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, assess student learning and instructional effectiveness...and

  • To provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the school library program (SLP) is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of the school and the school district, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program."

Strong school libraries build strong students...
